 <strong>In simple terms:<\/strong>\r\n        fatty liver means that excess fat has accumulated inside liver cells. When that\r\n        steatosis occurs in a person with metabolic risk factors, and harmful alcohol intake\r\n        or another primary cause does not better explain it, the modern term is\r\n        <strong>metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)<\/strong>.\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        MASLD sits within a broader group of conditions called steatotic liver disease.\r\n        Some people have fat in the liver without meaningful inflammation or scarring.\r\n        Others develop metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), where\r\n        steatosis is accompanied by hepatocellular injury and inflammation. Persistent\r\n        injury can lead to fibrosis, then cirrhosis in a smaller proportion of patients.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        The condition is closely linked to cardiometabolic health. Obesity, increased\r\n        abdominal or visceral fat, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia and\r\n        high blood pressure are important associations. This is why modern management\r\n        focuses not only on the liver but also on cardiovascular, metabolic and kidney risk.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Fatty liver is frequently discovered incidentally. A routine abdominal ultrasound\r\n        may show a bright or echogenic liver, or blood tests may reveal an abnormal ALT,\r\n        AST or GGT. Importantly, routine liver blood tests can be normal even when steatosis\r\n        or clinically significant fibrosis is present. NICE specifically advises against\r\n        using routine liver blood tests alone to rule out fatty liver disease or advanced\r\n        fibrosis.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"liver-function\">\r\n      <h2>What does the liver actually do?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        The liver is one of the body's major metabolic organs. It sits predominantly in the\r\n        right upper abdomen beneath the diaphragm and receives blood from both the hepatic\r\n        artery and portal vein. Its functions are wide-ranging, which is why significant\r\n        chronic liver disease can affect many systems.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"two-col\">\r\n        <div class=\"card\">\r\n          <h3>Metabolism<\/h3>\r\n          <p>\r\n            The liver helps regulate glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and amino acids.\r\n            It stores glycogen and releases glucose when needed. It also converts and\r\n            packages fats for transport.\r\n          <\/p>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n        <div class=\"card\">\r\n          <h3>Protein production<\/h3>\r\n          <p>\r\n            It produces albumin and many clotting factors. Falling albumin or a prolonged\r\n            clotting time can be a sign of impaired synthetic function in advanced disease,\r\n            although these usually remain normal in early MASLD.\r\n          <\/p>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n        <div class=\"card\">\r\n          <h3>Bile production<\/h3>\r\n          <p>\r\n            Bile made by the liver helps digest and absorb dietary fats. The older term\r\n        <strong>non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)<\/strong> defined the condition\r\n        largely by what it was not: significant alcohol-related disease. The underlying clinical concepts overlap substantially,\r\n        so a previous diagnosis of NAFLD does not suddenly become invalid because the\r\n        terminology has changed.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"epidemiology\">\r\n      <h2>How common is fatty liver disease?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        MASLD is one of the most common chronic liver disorders worldwide. It is particularly\r\n        common in people with type 2 diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. NICE notes that\r\n        NAFLD is present in more than half of adults with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome\r\n        in the evidence underpinning its research recommendations.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Not everyone with liver fat develops advanced disease. The clinical challenge is\r\n        identifying the smaller group with progressive inflammation and fibrosis. This is why\r\n        modern pathways increasingly use staged risk assessment rather than treating every\r\n        bright liver on ultrasound as equivalent.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"clinical-box\">\r\n        <strong>The important question is not simply \u201cDo I have fat in my liver?\u201d<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          A more useful question is: <em>\u201cDo I have evidence that the liver is being injured or\r\n          scarred, and what cardiometabolic factors are driving that risk?\u201d<\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"causes\">\r\n      <h2>What causes MASLD?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        MASLD develops when energy and lipid handling become dysregulated and excess fat\r\n        accumulates in hepatocytes. Insulin resistance plays a central role. Increased\r\n        delivery of fatty acids from adipose tissue, increased production of fat within the\r\n        liver and altered export or oxidation of fat all contribute.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Common risk factors<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <ul>\r\n        <li>Overweight or obesity, especially increased abdominal or visceral fat.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.<\/li>\r\n        <li>High triglycerides or other dyslipidaemia.<\/li>\r\n        <li>High blood pressure.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Metabolic syndrome.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), particularly where insulin resistance is present.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Obstructive sleep apnoea and other conditions associated with metabolic dysfunction.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Low physical activity and diets high in ultra-processed foods or sugar-sweetened drinks.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Family\/genetic susceptibility.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Can lean people develop MASLD?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Yes. MASLD is not restricted to people with obesity. The 2024 European guideline\r\n        recognises normal-weight MASLD. A person can have a BMI within the normal range but\r\n        still have increased visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, reduced muscle mass or\r\n        genetic susceptibility. For that reason, body weight is an important risk marker but\r\n        not the whole story.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"myth-box\">\r\n        <strong>Myth: \u201cFatty liver only happens because somebody is overweight.\u201d<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          Weight is important, but MASLD is a metabolic condition influenced by fat\r\n          distribution, insulin sensitivity, genetics, diet, activity, age and other\r\n          cardiometabolic factors.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <h3>What about alcohol?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Alcohol history remains important. Significant alcohol exposure can itself cause\r\n        steatosis and progressive liver disease, and alcohol can add to metabolic liver risk.\r\n        The newer nomenclature recognises overlap categories such as MetALD. Patients should\r\n        give clinicians an accurate alcohol history rather than assuming that a diagnosis of\r\n        \u201cfatty liver\u201d automatically means alcohol is irrelevant.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"symptoms\">\r\n      <h2>What are the symptoms of fatty liver disease?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Most people with early MASLD have no specific symptoms. The NHS notes that many\r\n        people are diagnosed only because blood tests or scans were performed for another\r\n        reason.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"two-col\">\r\n        <div class=\"card\">\r\n          <h3>Possible early symptoms<\/h3>\r\n          <ul>\r\n            <li>Persistent tiredness or low energy.<\/li>\r\n            <li>A general sense of being unwell.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Right upper abdominal discomfort beneath the ribs.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Symptoms related to associated diabetes or metabolic disease rather than the liver itself.<\/li>\r\n          <\/ul>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n        <div class=\"card\">\r\n          <h3>Symptoms of advanced disease<\/h3>\r\n          <ul>\r\n            <li>Abdominal swelling from ascites.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Leg swelling.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Jaundice.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Easy bruising or bleeding.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Muscle loss or weight loss.<\/li>\r\n            <li>Confusion or altered concentration in decompensated disease.<\/li>\r\n          <\/ul>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"warning-box\">\r\n        <strong>Symptoms are a poor screening test for liver fibrosis.<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          A person can have clinically important fibrosis while feeling well. Conversely,\r\n          fatigue or abdominal discomfort can have many causes unrelated to the liver.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"progression\">\r\n      <h2>Stages of fatty liver disease<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Fatty liver disease exists on a spectrum. Histological staging is more detailed and individual progression rates vary.<\/div>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Why fibrosis matters<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Liver fat can fluctuate relatively quickly with metabolic changes. Fibrosis reflects\r\n        a longer-term wound-healing response to persistent injury. Advanced fibrosis is a\r\n        stronger predictor of liver-related outcomes than steatosis alone, so fibrosis\r\n        assessment is an important part of modern MASLD care.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"diagnosis\">\r\n      <h2>How is MASLD diagnosed?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        There is no single test that answers every question. Diagnosis usually combines the\r\n        clinical history, cardiometabolic risk profile, alcohol assessment, liver blood tests\r\n        and imaging. Additional blood tests may be used to exclude alternative causes of\r\n        liver disease.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>A typical diagnostic pathway<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <ol>\r\n        <li><strong>Identify steatosis or risk:<\/strong> abnormal ultrasound, abnormal liver blood tests or significant cardiometabolic risk.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Review alternative causes:<\/strong> alcohol, medicines, viral hepatitis, autoimmune disease, haemochromatosis and other relevant conditions depending on the presentation.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Assess fibrosis risk:<\/strong> blood-based scores such as FIB-4 or other locally used tests.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Use second-line fibrosis testing where indicated:<\/strong> transient elastography, shear-wave elastography, ARFI-based techniques or ELF depending on local pathways.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Refer higher-risk patients:<\/strong> hepatology assessment when advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, diagnostic uncertainty or another concerning feature is present.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ol>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        The 2024 EASL\u2013EASD\u2013EASO guideline supports case-finding for liver fibrosis in people\r\n        with cardiometabolic risk factors, abnormal liver enzymes and\/or radiological\r\n        steatosis, with particular attention to type 2 diabetes and obesity with additional\r\n        metabolic risk factors. A staged approach using FIB-4 followed by imaging-based\r\n        elastography is specifically highlighted.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"blood-tests\">\r\n      <h2>Liver blood tests explained<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        \u201cLiver function tests\u201d is a convenient phrase, but not every component directly\r\n        measures liver function. Some markers reflect hepatocellular injury, others\r\n        cholestasis, and others synthetic capacity. Imaging and fibrosis risk assessment may still\r\n          be appropriate when the clinical risk is significant.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <h3>What is FIB-4?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        FIB-4 is a simple fibrosis risk score derived from age, AST, ALT and platelet count.\r\n        It is useful as a first-stage risk stratification tool rather than as a definitive\r\n        diagnosis. It is affected by machine settings, body\r\n        habitus, fibrosis, operator technique and the subjective nature of comparing\r\n        echogenicity. Modern quantitative attenuation techniques aim to provide a more\r\n        reproducible estimate of liver fat.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"quantification\">\r\n      <h2>Quantitative ultrasound fat assessment<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Newer ultrasound platforms can estimate how strongly the liver attenuates the\r\n        ultrasound beam. Because fat changes acoustic attenuation, these measurements can\r\n        provide an objective parameter related to steatosis rather than relying only on a\r\n        visual \u201cbright liver\u201d impression.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>UGAP and attenuation-based techniques<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Ultrasound-guided attenuation parameter (UGAP) and similar vendor-specific methods\r\n        measure attenuation within a defined liver region of interest. The result is usually\r\n        expressed in attenuation units such as dB\/cm\/MHz. Thresholds vary by technology and\r\n        validation study, so results must be interpreted using the correct manufacturer and\r\n        evidence base rather than applying one machine's cut-off to another.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Quantitative fat assessment can be useful for baseline characterisation and\r\n        longitudinal monitoring, particularly when performed on the same platform under\r\n        similar conditions. It does not by itself tell you the fibrosis stage or prove MASH.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"elastography\">\r\n      <h2>Elastography, liver stiffness and FibroScan<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Elastography estimates tissue stiffness. In chronic liver disease, fibrosis tends to\r\n        increase liver stiffness, which makes elastography useful for non-invasive fibrosis\r\n        risk assessment.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Shear-wave elastography (SWE)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Shear-wave elastography uses ultrasound-generated shear waves and measures their\r\n        propagation through the liver. Results may be displayed in metres per second (m\/s)\r\n        or converted to kilopascals (kPa). The examination is performed using defined\r\n        quality criteria, typically through an intercostal window with a region of interest\r\n        placed in appropriate liver parenchyma away from large vessels and artefacts.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>FibroScan \/ vibration-controlled transient elastography<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        FibroScan uses vibration-controlled transient elastography to estimate liver\r\n        stiffness. NICE HealthTech guidance recognises FibroScan as a non-invasive method for\r\n        assessing fibrosis and cirrhosis in defined pathways. FibroScan can also provide a\r\n        controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) to estimate steatosis.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"warning-box\">\r\n        <strong>A stiffness result is not a biopsy stage printed by a machine.<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          Liver stiffness is influenced by fibrosis but can also rise with active\r\n          inflammation, cholestasis, hepatic congestion, recent food intake and technical\r\n          factors. Cut-offs vary by disease population and technology. The result should be\r\n          interpreted with the clinical context and quality metrics.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Why use both fat and stiffness measurements?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        They answer different questions. Attenuation-based measures estimate the amount of\r\n        steatosis; elastography estimates stiffness and therefore fibrosis risk. There is no single\r\n        universal \u201cfatty liver cure.\u201d The foundation is reducing the metabolic drivers of\r\n        liver injury.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>1. Improve diet quality<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        The 2024 European MASLD guideline recommends improving diet quality in a pattern\r\n        similar to a Mediterranean diet, limiting ultra-processed foods rich in sugar and\r\n        saturated fat, and avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages. The practical goal is a\r\n        sustainable eating pattern rather than a short restrictive \u201cliver detox.\u201d\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>2. Exercise regularly<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Physical activity can reduce liver fat and improve insulin sensitivity even when\r\n        weight loss is modest. The NHS advises aiming for at least 150 minutes of exercise\r\n        each week for people with fatty liver disease, adapted to individual health and\r\n        capability.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>3. Manage diabetes, lipids and blood pressure<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Cardiovascular disease is a major source of morbidity in MASLD. Optimal management\r\n        of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia is therefore central to treatment,\r\n        not an optional extra.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>4. Address alcohol intake<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Alcohol can compound liver injury. Patients with MASLD should discuss alcohol\r\n        exposure with their healthcare professional, particularly if fibrosis is present.\r\n        NHS advice for the general population remains not to exceed 14 units per week, but a\r\n        lower or zero intake may be appropriate for some people with liver disease.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>5. Stop smoking<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Smoking increases cardiovascular and cancer risk and undermines overall metabolic\r\n        health. Stopping smoking is one of the most valuable long-term health interventions\r\n        a person can make.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"weight-loss\">\r\n      <h2>How much weight loss improves fatty liver?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        When a person with MASLD is overweight, the magnitude of sustained weight loss\r\n        matters. Rapid crash diets can be\r\n        difficult to maintain and may be unsuitable for some patients. People with advanced\r\n        liver disease, frailty, eating disorders, pregnancy or major medical conditions\r\n        should seek personalised advice before undertaking a significant weight-loss plan.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"info-box\">\r\n        <strong>Normal-weight MASLD still benefits from lifestyle improvement.<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          European guidance recommends diet and exercise interventions even in normal-weight\r\n          adults with MASLD because liver fat can improve without obesity being present.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"medicines\">\r\n      <h2>Are there medicines for MASLD or MASH?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Pharmacological treatment is evolving rapidly. Medicines may be prescribed primarily\r\n        for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular risk or selected liver indications. Treatment\r\n        should be clinician-led rather than based on a scan result alone.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>GLP-1 receptor agonists and incretin-based therapy<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide may be indicated for type 2 diabetes or\r\n        obesity in appropriate patients and can produce substantial weight loss and metabolic\r\n        improvement. European guidance supports their use for their licensed metabolic\r\n        indications in people with MASLD, while distinguishing this from recommending every\r\n        GLP-1 drug as a direct MASH-targeted therapy.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Resmetirom<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Resmetirom has been approved in some jurisdictions for selected adults with\r\n        non-cirrhotic MASH and significant fibrosis. Availability and licensing vary by\r\n        country, and treatment decisions require specialist assessment. It should not be\r\n        viewed as a general treatment for everyone with an ultrasound diagnosis of fatty\r\n        liver.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>Pioglitazone, vitamin E and other treatments<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Older guidelines and selected specialist pathways discuss pioglitazone or vitamin E\r\n        for particular groups. Evidence and recommendations depend on diabetes status,\r\n        fibrosis stage, age and setting. These should not be self-started for fatty liver.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"warning-box\">\r\n        <strong>Avoid unregulated \u201cliver detox\u201d supplements.<\/strong>\r\n        <p style=\"margin:7px 0 0\">\r\n          \u201cNatural\u201d does not mean liver-safe. Herbal and dietary supplements can themselves\r\n          cause liver injury or interact with prescribed medication. Discuss supplements\r\n          with a pharmacist, GP or liver specialist.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n\r\n    <section id=\"monitoring\">\r\n      <h2>Monitoring, follow-up and prognosis<\/h2>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Monitoring should be driven by fibrosis risk and metabolic health rather than\r\n        repeating a conventional ultrasound at arbitrary intervals. Follow-up may include\r\n        weight, blood pressure, HbA1c\/glucose, lipid profile, liver blood tests, fibrosis\r\n        scores and repeat non-invasive fibrosis assessment.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        NICE recommends assessment for advanced liver fibrosis in people diagnosed with\r\n        NAFLD. Its current NG49 pathway uses the ELF test, with specialist referral for\r\n        advanced fibrosis. In real-world UK practice, availability varies, and FibroScan or\r\n        other elastography techniques are frequently used alongside blood-based risk scores.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n\r\n      <h3>What determines prognosis?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n      <ul>\r\n        <li>Fibrosis stage.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Presence and control of type 2 diabetes.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Obesity and visceral adiposity.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Cardiovascular disease and overall metabolic risk.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Alcohol exposure.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Age and other liver diseases.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Whether lifestyle and metabolic risk factors improve over time.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n\r\n      <p>\r\n        Early steatosis can improve substantially. Advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis require\r\n        closer specialist follow-up because risks include portal hypertension, liver\r\n        decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma. Moderate or marked hepatic steatosis often produces characteristic increased\r\n          echogenicity and attenuation. Mild steatosis may be less conspicuous, and image\r\n          quality can be affected by body habitus and other technical factors.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Can I have fatty liver with normal ALT and AST?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          Yes. Normal routine liver enzymes do not exclude steatosis or fibrosis. NICE\r\n          specifically advises against using routine liver blood tests alone to rule out\r\n          fatty liver disease or advanced fibrosis.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Does fatty liver always progress to cirrhosis?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          No. Many people remain at the steatosis stage, particularly when metabolic risk\r\n          factors are improved. A smaller group develops progressive inflammation and\r\n          fibrosis. Fibrosis risk assessment helps identify people who need closer follow-up.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Can fatty liver be reversed?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          Liver fat can fall substantially with sustained improvements in weight, diet,\r\n          physical activity and metabolic control. MASH can also improve. Fibrosis can regress\r\n          in some people, but advanced fibrosis is more difficult to reverse, which is why\r\n          early intervention matters.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>What is the difference between fatty liver and fibrosis?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          Steatosis describes excess fat within liver cells. Fibrosis is scar tissue produced\r\n          after persistent injury. A person can have significant steatosis with little\r\n          fibrosis, or advanced fibrosis after years of liver injury even when current fat\r\n          levels are less striking.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Does a conventional liver ultrasound tell me my fibrosis stage?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          Not reliably. Advanced chronic liver disease may produce morphological signs on\r\n          B-mode ultrasound, but early fibrosis cannot be staged accurately from brightness\r\n          or texture alone. Elastography and\/or validated blood-based tests are used for\r\n          non-invasive fibrosis risk assessment.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>What is the difference between FibroScan and shear-wave elastography?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          Both are non-invasive elastography methods used to estimate liver stiffness.\r\n          FibroScan uses vibration-controlled transient elastography, whereas shear-wave\r\n          elastography is integrated into many diagnostic ultrasound systems. They have\r\n          different acquisition methods and validated cut-offs, so results are not\r\n          interchangeable without context.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Is fatty liver caused by eating fat?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          The biology is more complex. MASLD reflects disordered energy metabolism and\r\n          insulin resistance, influenced by calorie excess, visceral adiposity, dietary\r\n          composition, genetics and physical activity. Simply removing all dietary fat is not\r\n          the recommended treatment.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/details>\r\n\r\n      <details>\r\n        <summary>Should I stop alcohol completely?<\/summary>\r\n        <p>\r\n          This depends on your liver status and overall risk. Alcohol can add to metabolic\r\n          liver injury.
