Why choose this scan?

Liver disease often develops silently. If you have abnormal LFTs, upper-abdominal discomfort, fatigue, bloating or risk factors such as metabolic syndrome or alcohol excess, a private liver ultrasound offers rapid clarity without long waits.

What we assess

  • Fatty Liver (NAFLD/AFLD): Fat infiltration and echotexture change.
  • Fibrosis/Cirrhosis: Surface nodularity, coarse echotexture, portal changes.
  • Focal lesions: Cysts, haemangiomas and other masses.
  • Biliary tree & gallbladder: Duct dilatation, stones, sludge, cholecystitis features.
  • Portal/hepatic vasculature: Patency and direction of flow where assessable.

Who it’s for

Adults with abnormal blood tests, risk factors for fatty liver or hepatitis, persistent RUQ pain/bloating, family history of liver disease, or anyone seeking a proactive liver health check.

How to prepare

  • Fasting 6–8 hours: Water allowed; avoid food and sugary drinks to reduce bowel gas and optimise views.
  • Medications: Take as normal with small sips of water unless advised otherwise.
  • Clothing: Wear a loose top for easy upper-abdomen access.

During your scan

A non-invasive, radiation-free ultrasound probe is moved across the right upper abdomen with acoustic gel. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly for clearer imaging. Typical duration is 15–20 minutes.

Results & next steps

You’ll receive a same-day report with actionable guidance. If we detect abnormalities, we’ll recommend appropriate follow-up such as GP review, bloods, FibroScan, MRI/CT or hepatology referral.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. We’ll provide a same-day report you can share with your GP or specialist.
How long does the liver scan take?
Most appointments take 15–20 minutes. Please arrive a few minutes early to complete a brief checklist.
Will I get my results straight away?
Yes. Your sonographer will explain the findings and you’ll receive a same-day written report.
Is fasting required?
Yes — 6–8 hours (water only). This reduces bowel gas and improves visualisation of the liver and bile ducts.
What happens if the scan is abnormal?
We’ll outline next steps, which may include targeted bloods, FibroScan®, cross-sectional imaging, or referral to your GP/hepatology.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) and is considered very safe.
