Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs are designed to answer the most common questions men have before booking a private male breast ultrasound. If you’re unsure which option to choose (one breast vs both breasts), call us and we’ll guide you.
1) What symptoms should prompt a male breast ultrasound?
Book if you’ve noticed a lump, swelling, tenderness, nipple changes (inversion/skin change), new asymmetry, or persistent pain.
Ultrasound helps assess benign causes such as gynaecomastia and also identifies features that may need urgent onward review.
2) What is gynaecomastia and can ultrasound confirm it?
Gynaecomastia is benign enlargement of male breast tissue, often behind the nipple. Ultrasound can identify typical retro-areolar patterns
and assess for other causes of lumps or pain.
3) One breast or both breasts — which should I book?
If symptoms are on one side only, one breast (£185) is usually appropriate. If symptoms are bilateral, you want full reassurance, or there’s uncertainty,
choose both breasts (£300).
4) Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed for private scanning. If we identify features requiring further assessment, we will advise a GP referral to an NHS breast clinic
for the appropriate next steps.
5) Is ultrasound safe? Is there any radiation?
Ultrasound uses sound waves only. There is no ionising radiation, and it’s widely used as a safe first-line imaging test for many soft tissue conditions.
6) Will I receive results on the day?
Yes. You’ll receive an explanation after the scan and a clear same-day written report. If further assessment is recommended, we’ll explain why and what to do next.
7) What happens during the scan?
A sonographer applies gel and uses a high-frequency probe to examine the symptomatic area (and the other side if booked).
The scan is typically painless and takes about 10–20 minutes.
8) Is the scan painful?
Most patients find it comfortable. If the area is very tender, we scan gently and adapt technique to keep you comfortable.
9) Can ultrasound tell if a lump is a cyst or a solid mass?
Yes. Ultrasound is excellent at distinguishing fluid-filled cysts from solid tissue and can characterise lump features to guide next steps.
10) What common benign findings do you see in men?
Common benign causes include gynaecomastia, lipomas (fatty lumps), simple cysts, reactive changes, or inflammation. We explain findings and advise appropriate follow-up.
11) Can men get breast cancer?
Yes, it is rare but possible. Any new lump or nipple change should be assessed. If ultrasound shows features needing urgent specialist review,
we advise immediate GP/NHS breast clinic referral.
12) Do you scan the underarm (axilla) lymph nodes?
If clinically indicated (e.g., concerning features or symptoms), we can assess the axilla to look at lymph node morphology and provide guidance on next steps.
13) What if I’m on testosterone, steroids, or certain medications?
Some hormones and medications can contribute to gynaecomastia. Tell us your medication history on the day.
Ultrasound assesses the breast tissue regardless, and we can advise speaking to your GP if medication review is appropriate.
14) How should I prepare for the appointment?
No special preparation is required. Avoid lotions/powders on your chest and wear clothing that’s easy to remove from the upper body.
15) Do I need to bring anything?
If you have previous imaging reports or clinic letters, bring them (or email them in advance if possible). Otherwise, nothing special is required.
16) Can you do a biopsy if something looks suspicious?
This page is for ultrasound assessment. If further procedures are needed, we will advise the most appropriate pathway—typically NHS breast clinic assessment where biopsy can be arranged.
17) What if I have nipple discharge?
Mention this when booking/checking in. Ultrasound can assess retro-areolar tissue and surrounding structures.
Depending on features, we may recommend onward breast clinic assessment.
18) How quickly can I get an appointment?
Availability varies by clinic. Use the booking calendar below to see live appointment slots across Tunbridge Wells, Orpington and Central London.
19) Will you share the report with my GP?
You can share the report with your GP or specialist. If you need it in a particular format, tell us at the appointment and we’ll help where possible.
20) What if my symptoms persist but the ultrasound is normal?
We will advise based on your symptoms and ultrasound findings. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be reviewed by your GP,
and we may recommend NHS breast clinic assessment depending on the clinical picture.
21) Is this scan confidential and discreet?
Yes. Your appointment and results are handled confidentially. Our clinics are designed to be calm, private, and respectful.
22) Can I book if I’m under 18?
If the patient is under 18, please contact us first to ensure the most appropriate pathway, consent arrangements, and safeguarding considerations.
23) Does the price include a report?
Yes. Both the one breast (£185) and both breasts (£300) options include a same-day written report and explanation of findings.
24) Which clinics offer this scan?
UKSONO provides clinics in Tunbridge Wells, Orpington, and Central London. Select your preferred location in the booking calendar.
