The appointment remains a clinical ultrasound. We assess fetal wellbeing and review relevant fetal anatomy visible for the gestation before optional fetal sex confirmation.
Fetal cardiac activity
Heartbeat is confirmed where visible and appropriate for gestation.
Visible fetal movement
Movement is observed during the examination where technically and clinically appropriate.
Fetal position
Baby’s position may be documented where relevant, recognising that position can change throughout pregnancy.
Placenta overview
Placental position or appearance may be reviewed where appropriate and technically visible.
Amniotic fluid overview
Fluid can be reviewed as part of the wellbeing assessment where appropriate to gestation.
Optional fetal sex confirmation
Gender is confirmed only when the relevant anatomy is clearly and reliably visualised.

As part of the Gender & Fetal Wellbeing Scan, the Sonographer reviews relevant fetal anatomy that is visible and appropriate for the gestation. This is a useful clinical overview, but it is not a substitute for the structured NHS 20-week screening scan or a dedicated detailed fetal anatomy examination.
Structures we may review
Depending on gestation, fetal position and image quality, this may include an overview of the head and brain, face, spine, four-chamber cardiac appearance, stomach, bladder, kidneys, abdominal wall and limbs.
Important limitation
This is a focused wellbeing and gender scan, not a formal anomaly screening examination. Not every fetal structure is assessed to FASP anatomy-scan protocol, and a reassuring scan cannot exclude all fetal abnormalities.

What this scan is designed for
Focused pregnancy wellbeing appropriate to gestation, review of relevant visible fetal anatomy, optional fetal sex confirmation when visualisation is clear, and digital documentation of the examination.
What this scan does not replace
The NHS anomaly scan, a full FASP-style detailed structural assessment, dedicated growth surveillance, fetal Doppler assessment, fetal medicine review, maternity triage or emergency care.
Clinical reporting first, memorable images where possible.
Your Sonographer explains the wellbeing findings and the relevant fetal anatomy reviewed during the appointment. Fetal sex is documented or communicated only when the view is considered clear and reliable.
Reduced or changed fetal movements later in pregnancy, heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, leaking fluid, unexpected contractions, fainting, marked dizziness, fever or feeling very unwell require appropriate NHS maternity assessment.
