Overview

Private venous reflux and varicose vein mapping ultrasound

This scan assesses the function and flow of the veins in the legs, helping to identify venous reflux and chronic venous insufficiency.

Why this scan is important

Varicose veins are often more than a cosmetic concern. They may be linked with valve incompetence, reflux, leg swelling, skin changes, venous eczema or ulceration.

At UKSONO Healthcare, we assess the deep, superficial and perforator venous systems, helping your clinician understand the cause and plan appropriate treatment.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

1. What is a venous insufficiency duplex ultrasound scan?

It is a non-invasive ultrasound scan that assesses blood flow and valve function in the leg veins, helping to identify reflux and varicose vein pathways.

2. Is this the same as a DVT scan?

No. This scan is for chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins. If you are concerned about DVT, please book a dedicated DVT ultrasound scan or seek urgent medical advice.

3. How much does the scan cost?

The price is £190 for one leg and £350 for both legs.

4. Should I book one leg or both legs?

Book one leg if your symptoms are only on one side. Book both legs if symptoms, swelling or varicose veins affect both legs, or if your clinician has requested bilateral mapping.

5. Can this scan help with varicose vein treatment planning?

Yes. The scan includes vein mapping and reflux assessment, which can help vascular specialists plan treatments such as laser, foam sclerotherapy or surgery.

6. Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not always required for private ultrasound appointments, but your report should be reviewed by an appropriate clinician if further treatment is needed.

7. Is the scan painful?

No. The scan is non-invasive and painless. Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved gently along the leg.

8. Will I need to stand during the scan?

You may be asked to stand for part of the scan because reflux is often better assessed when the veins are under normal standing pressure.

9. How long does the scan take?

The scan usually takes approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on whether one leg or both legs are being assessed.

10. What should I wear?

Please wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your legs. Shorts are helpful if available.

11. Will I receive a report?

Yes. You will receive a detailed report outlining the findings. With your consent, this can be shared with your GP, vascular consultant or specialist.

12. Can the scan diagnose the cause of leg swelling?

It can help assess whether venous reflux or venous insufficiency may be contributing to swelling. Other causes may still need review by your GP or specialist.
