What we assess
- Arteries: Common, internal and external carotids; vertebral arteries when indicated (bilateral study).
- Stenosis & plaque: B-mode, colour and spectral Doppler evaluation with velocity measurements for grading narrowing.
- Blood flow: Direction and waveform analysis to identify haemodynamic significance.
- CIMT: Carotid intima-media thickness measurement to help evaluate arterial wall thickening and cardiovascular risk context.
What to expect
- Painless scan with a small amount of gel; performed lying semi-reclined.
- Typical duration 20–30 minutes; both sides of the neck are examined.
- Doppler velocities recorded where appropriate to assist stenosis grading.
- No radiation; ultrasound is considered safe at diagnostic levels.

FAQs
What is a carotid duplex scan?
A duplex ultrasound uses B-mode imaging plus colour and spectral Doppler to assess plaque, narrowing and blood flow in the carotid arteries. It is a bilateral, non-invasive assessment.
What is CIMT and why include it?
CIMT (carotid intima-media thickness) measures the thickness of the inner carotid artery wall layers. Increased thickness and plaque are associated with cardiovascular risk; CIMT can help contextualise risk alongside clinical factors.
Will I get results the same day?
Yes — you’ll receive an immediate verbal summary and a written report shortly after your appointment.
Do I need a GP referral?
Self-referral is available for many scans at UKSONO. If a referral is required, we will advise you.
