This combined examination is designed for symptoms that extend across the knee and calf, or where both regions need assessment during the same appointment.
The scan can assess knee tendons, bursae, joint effusion and Baker’s cysts alongside calf muscles, haematoma, fluid collections and other superficial soft-tissue abnormalities.
It is particularly useful after sports injury or where pain and swelling involve both the back of the knee and calf.

The examination is tailored to the distribution of your symptoms and the structures requiring assessment.
Knee tendons
Assessment of the quadriceps and patellar tendons for tendinopathy, tearing and related soft-tissue abnormalities.
Baker’s cyst & joint fluid
Assessment of the popliteal region for Baker’s cysts and the suprapatellar recess for visible joint effusion.
Calf muscles
Assessment of the gastrocnemius, soleus and accessible plantaris region for strain, tearing and focal muscle injury.
Haematoma & fluid
Assessment of localised haematoma and other superficial fluid collections after injury.
Bursae & soft tissues
Assessment of accessible bursae, focal swelling and superficial soft-tissue abnormalities around the knee and calf.
Dynamic assessment

Excellent for superficial MSK structures
Ultrasound is well suited to knee tendons, bursae, Baker’s cysts, calf muscle tears, haematoma and many superficial abnormalities.
MRI may be needed
Deep meniscal, cruciate-ligament, cartilage or complex internal knee injuries are generally better assessed with MRI.
Vascular symptoms need the correct pathway
If the main concern is possible deep-vein thrombosis rather than a musculoskeletal injury, a dedicated venous duplex assessment may be more appropriate.

Clinical history
We review the location of symptoms, injury mechanism, swelling, bruising and movement-related pain.
Knee assessment
The relevant tendons, bursae, joint recesses and posterior knee are assessed.
Calf assessment
The symptomatic calf muscles and surrounding superficial soft tissues are examined, including dynamically where helpful.
Results & report
The main findings are explained and a formal written report is provided the same day.
No special preparation is required
Wear loose clothing
Clothing that allows easy access from the knee through the calf is ideal.
Bring previous results
Bring relevant MRI, X-ray, ultrasound reports or clinic letters if available.
Expect movement
You may be asked to bend the knee, move the ankle or gently contract the calf during dynamic assessment.
