What to expect

• Comfortable, painless scan using acoustic gel and a high-resolution probe.
• Typical duration 10–15 minutes with same-day explanation of findings.
• No radiation and no injections.

What you’ll receive

• Immediate verbal summary and a same-day written note when clinically indicated.

Preparation

• Fasting for 6–8 hours is recommended for clearer images (small sips of water are usually fine unless advised otherwise).
• Continue regular medications unless you have been told otherwise.
• Please let us know about diabetes or specific dietary needs so we can tailor prep.

Fasting helps reduce bowel gas and improves visualisation of the aorta.

Why AAA screening?

• AAA can grow silently; ultrasound screening reduces the chance of missing a significant aneurysm.
• In the NHS, men are invited for a one-off scan at age 65 because risk rises with age and smoking.
• Private screening is available to others with risk factors after discussion with a clinician.
