Understanding DVT

When a blood clot is suspected, ultrasound matters.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is a clot within a deep vein, most often affecting the leg and less commonly the arm. Venous ultrasound is used to assess the deep veins for signs of thrombosis.

What is DVT?

A blood clot forms within a deep vein and can partially or completely obstruct venous flow. A clot can sometimes embolise to the lungs, causing pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms that may prompt a scan

✓New unilateral limb swelling
✓Calf, thigh or arm pain/tenderness
✓Warmth or redness along the limb
✓Unexplained swelling after travel, surgery or immobility

Risk factors

✓Recent surgery, trauma or prolonged immobility
✓Previous DVT, PE or known thrombophilia
✓Pregnancy or hormonal therapy
✓Long-haul travel or other relevant clinical risk factors
What we assess

A focused venous duplex examination.

The scan combines B-mode ultrasound, compression testing and Doppler assessment to evaluate the deep venous system of the symptomatic limb.

01

Vein compressibility

Deep veins are assessed using gentle probe compression, an important part of evaluating for thrombus.

02

Intraluminal appearances

The vein lumen is assessed for visible material or appearances that may indicate thrombosis.

03

Venous blood flow

Colour and pulsed-wave Doppler are used where appropriate to assess venous flow characteristics.

04

Relevant vein segments

Proximal and distal deep venous segments are assessed according to the symptomatic limb and clinical indication.

Preparation & scan

Simple preparation. Focused examination.

A DVT ultrasound is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation.

No special preparationYou can generally eat, drink and take usual medication normally unless otherwise advised.
Wear loose clothingThe Sonographer will need access to the relevant leg or arm.
Bring relevant informationPrevious DVT/PE history, recent surgery, anticoagulation or prior reports can provide useful clinical context.
01
Clinical historyYour Sonographer reviews symptoms, onset, risk factors and relevant medical history.
02
Ultrasound examinationGel is applied and the deep veins are examined with real-time ultrasound.
03
Compression & DopplerGentle pressure is used to assess vein compressibility, with Doppler added to assess blood flow.
04
Findings explainedThe main ultrasound findings are discussed with you after the examination.
05
Same-day report & next stepsYour written report is provided the same day. If DVT is detected, urgent onward guidance is given.

Frequently asked questions

Before your DVT ultrasound.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can self-refer and book directly. A same-day written report is provided for your records or onward clinical care.

Can you scan a leg or an arm for DVT?

Yes. The service can assess a symptomatic leg or arm, depending on the clinical indication.

How long does the scan take?

A focused DVT ultrasound typically takes around 10–15 minutes, although this may vary according to the area being assessed and the findings.

Is the scan painful?

The examination is non-invasive. You may feel pressure when the Sonographer gently compresses the veins, particularly if the limb is already tender.

How accurate is DVT ultrasound?

Compression ultrasound with Doppler is an established first-line imaging test for suspected lower-limb DVT, particularly within the proximal deep venous system.

How quickly will I get the result?

The main findings are explained during your appointment and your written ultrasound report is provided on the same day.

What happens if a blood clot is found?

You will be given urgent onward guidance and a report for the appropriate healthcare professional so treatment can be arranged promptly.

Can I book at Canary Wharf?

Yes. UKSONO Healthcare provides DVT ultrasound at Canary Wharf, 30 South Colonnade, London E14 5HX, as well as Tunbridge Wells and Orpington.

When should I seek emergency care instead of booking a scan?

Seek urgent medical assessment if you develop chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing blood, collapse or severe breathing difficulty, as these can be symptoms of pulmonary embolism.
