Detailed assessment of the testes, epididymides and scrotal contents
A testes and scrotum ultrasound is a non-invasive examination used to assess the testicular tissue, epididymides, scrotal fluid, superficial scrotal structures and blood flow.
It is commonly requested for a new lump, discomfort, swelling, asymmetry, suspected varicocele, hydrocele, epididymal cyst or inflammatory change.
Both sides are assessed for comparison, and colour Doppler may be used to evaluate vascularity where clinically relevant.
What a testes & scrotum ultrasound can assess
The examination is tailored to your symptoms and includes comparison of both sides.
Testicular tissue
Assessment of testicular size, echotexture and focal abnormalities, including suspicious intratesticular lesions.
Epididymides
Assessment for epididymal enlargement, cysts, spermatoceles and inflammatory change.
Varicocele
Assessment of dilated scrotal veins, including Doppler evaluation where appropriate.
Hydrocele
Assessment of fluid surrounding the testis and other scrotal fluid collections.
Inflammatory change
Ultrasound and Doppler findings that may be associated with epididymitis, orchitis or epididymo-orchitis.
Blood flow
Colour Doppler assessment of testicular and scrotal vascularity where clinically relevant.
Common reasons for a scrotal ultrasound
Testicular lump
A new or persistent lump within or around the testis that requires ultrasound characterisation.
Pain or discomfort
Persistent or intermittent testicular or scrotal discomfort requiring targeted assessment.
Swelling or asymmetry
One-sided or bilateral enlargement, fullness or a change in scrotal appearance.
Suspected varicocele
Prominent veins, dragging discomfort or a known varicocele requiring ultrasound assessment.
Suspected hydrocele or cyst
Fluid, an epididymal cyst or another benign-appearing scrotal swelling suspected clinically.
Inflammation or infection
Symptoms suggesting epididymal or testicular inflammation where ultrasound may contribute to assessment.
Ultrasound is the first-line imaging test for many scrotal concerns
It can distinguish many intratesticular and extratesticular abnormalities and assess blood flow with Doppler.
Excellent for lumps and swelling
Ultrasound can help determine whether a palpable abnormality arises from the testis, epididymis, scrotal wall or surrounding fluid.
Doppler blood-flow assessment
Colour Doppler can assess vascularity where inflammation, varicocele or another vascular concern is relevant.
Further assessment may be required
Suspicious or indeterminate findings may require urgent urology review, laboratory tests or additional imaging depending on the clinical situation.
What happens during the scan?
Clinical history
We review your symptoms, the location of any lump or discomfort, duration and relevant previous history.
Ultrasound assessment
Gel is applied and both testes and epididymides are assessed systematically for comparison.
Doppler assessment
Blood flow is assessed where clinically useful, including when evaluating inflammation or varicocele.
Results & report
The main findings are explained and a formal written report is provided the same day.

Wear comfortable clothing
Two-piece clothing is helpful for privacy and easy access to the examination area.
Bring previous results
Bring any relevant ultrasound, urology letters, laboratory results or previous imaging if available.
