What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg (calf or thigh) and less commonly in the arm. If untreated, a fragment can travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. Early diagnosis with ultrasound is critical to reduce complications and start treatment promptly.

Who should consider a DVT scan?

  • New limb swelling, pain or tenderness (especially calf or thigh)
  • Redness or warmth of the skin along a vein
  • Recent surgery, trauma or prolonged immobility (including long-haul flights)
  • Personal/family history of DVT/PE or thrombophilia
  • Pregnancy or hormonal therapy (e.g., contraceptives, HRT)

What to expect during the scan

What we assess
  • Deep venous system of the symptomatic limb (or both limbs if selected)
  • Compressibility, intraluminal echogenicity and venous flow with colour/pulsed Doppler
  • Extension into proximal/distal segments where clinically indicated

  • No special preparation required
  • Wear loose clothing to allow access to the limb
  • Bring any relevant referral or recent test results if available
