What is DVT?
Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg (calf or thigh) and less commonly in the arm. If untreated, a fragment can travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. Early diagnosis with ultrasound is critical to reduce complications and start treatment promptly.
Who should consider a DVT scan?
- New limb swelling, pain or tenderness (especially calf or thigh)
- Redness or warmth of the skin along a vein
- Recent surgery, trauma or prolonged immobility (including long-haul flights)
- Personal/family history of DVT/PE or thrombophilia
- Pregnancy or hormonal therapy (e.g., contraceptives, HRT)
