Venous Insufficiency / Varicose Vein Doppler Ultrasound Scan
At UKSONO Healthcare
Book a Detailed Venous Doppler Ultrasound to Assess for Varicose Veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Overview
A Venous Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless scan used to assess blood flow in the veins of the legs, typically to evaluate for varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), or associated complications such as skin changes, venous eczema, leg swelling, or ulceration.
At UKSONO Healthcare, we offer specialist lower limb venous duplex scanning using advanced ultrasound equipment to accurately visualise and assess the function of both the deep and superficial venous systems, including perforator veins. Our expert sonographers provide clear, actionable reports for your GP, vascular consultant, or referring clinician.
Why You Might Need This Scan
You may benefit from a venous Doppler ultrasound if you are experiencing:
  • Visible or bulging varicose veins
  • Leg pain, heaviness or cramping, especially after standing
  • Chronic swelling of the legs or ankles
  • Skin discolouration, thickening, or itching around the lower legs
  • Venous leg ulcers or a history of healed ulcers
  • Suspected incompetent perforator veins
  • Pre-treatment mapping prior to sclerotherapy, laser, or surgical intervention
What the Scan Includes
  • Assessment of deep veins (e.g. femoral, popliteal, tibial) for patency and flow
  • Detailed examination of the superficial veins (e.g. great and small saphenous veins)
  • Evaluation of reflux (reverse blood flow) using colour Doppler and augmentation techniques
  • Identification of incompetent perforator veins
  • Mapping of varicosities for treatment planning
  • Summary report including recommendations for further management if necessary
How the Scan Works
Using real-time B-mode imaging with colour and spectral Doppler, we evaluate the valves in your leg veins to determine if they are functioning correctly. You may be asked to stand or perform breathing manoeuvres, as this helps detect reflux, a key feature of venous insufficiency.
Preparation
  • No specific preparation is required
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing to allow easy access to your legs
  • You may be asked to stand for parts of the scan
Duration:
Approximately 30–45 minutes

Will I get a report?
Yes. A detailed report with findings and clinical recommendations will be provided and sent to your GP or specialist with your consent.
Can this scan help with treatment planning?
