Clinical assessment

What the Fetal Growth & Wellbeing Scan assesses.

The examination combines standard fetal growth measurements with gestation-appropriate wellbeing observations. What can be assessed depends on fetal position, gestation and technical visibility.

01

Fetal biometry

Standard measurements of the head, abdomen and femur are obtained where technically possible.

02

Estimated fetal weight

Biometric measurements are combined to estimate fetal weight, recognising the accepted margin of error of ultrasound estimation.

03

Growth percentile

Estimated size is considered against gestational age using reference charts, with the result interpreted in clinical context.

04

Umbilical artery Doppler

Umbilical artery blood-flow waveforms are assessed using pulsed-wave Doppler, with indices interpreted against gestational age where technically obtainable.

05

Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)

Amniotic fluid is assessed using an AFI measurement to provide a structured estimate of fluid volume around the baby.

06

Placenta, position & movement

Placental location, fetal lie or presentation and visible movements are reviewed where appropriate and technically visible.

Understanding the measurements

How fetal growth is estimated on ultrasound.

Growth assessment is based on a combination of biometric measurements rather than a single measurement. Each contributes different information about fetal size and proportionality.

Head

BPD / HC

Biparietal diameter and head circumference may be measured to assess fetal head size.

Abdomen

AC

Abdominal circumference is an important measurement used in estimating fetal size and weight.

Long bone

FL

Femur length contributes to fetal biometric assessment and estimated fetal weight calculations.

Combined estimate

EFW

Estimated fetal weight is calculated from biometric measurements and interpreted with gestational age and recognised ultrasound limitations.

Umbilical artery Doppler

Umbilical artery Doppler evaluates blood-flow resistance within the placental circulation. The waveform is sampled from the umbilical artery and Doppler indices are interpreted in relation to gestational age. This adds important haemodynamic information to the fetal growth assessment.

Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)

AFI is assessed by measuring the deepest vertical fluid pocket in each of four uterine quadrants and combining the measurements. The result helps document whether amniotic fluid volume appears within the expected range for the pregnancy.

Preparation & appointment

Designed for a clear, clinically useful assessment.

The examination is usually performed through the abdomen and is tailored to gestation, the baby’s position and your reason for booking.

Bring your datesKnow your estimated due date and bring any relevant previous scan information if you are comparing growth.
Comfortable clothingWear clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen.
Previous growth measurementsIf you have prior NHS or private growth data, bringing the report can help provide context, although measurements from different settings are not always directly interchangeable.
Tell us your main concernLet the Sonographer know if the scan is for general reassurance, size concerns, position, fluid or another specific question.
01
Clinical historyYour gestation, previous scans and reason for booking are reviewed.
02
Fetal biometryHead, abdominal and femur measurements are obtained where technically possible.
03
Estimated fetal sizeMeasurements are used to calculate an estimated fetal weight and size percentile where appropriate.
04
Doppler & fluid assessmentUmbilical artery Doppler and amniotic fluid index (AFI) are assessed alongside placental location, fetal position and visible movement.
05
Results & next stepsFindings are explained clearly, with onward guidance if NHS maternity review is appropriate.
Growth scan interpretation

A single scan is a snapshot. Growth trend can matter more.

Estimated fetal weight and centiles are useful, but they are not exact. When growth is being monitored clinically, the pattern across time may be more informative than one isolated measurement.

What this scan is designed for

Fetal biometry, estimated fetal weight, growth percentile, umbilical artery Doppler, amniotic fluid index (AFI), placental overview, fetal position and visible movement from 24–40 weeks.

What this scan does not replace

Formal NHS growth surveillance, specialist fetal medicine review, CTG, maternity triage, additional specialist fetal Doppler examinations beyond the included umbilical artery assessment, or emergency pregnancy care when these are clinically indicated.

Results & next steps

Detailed measurements, explained in context.

Your Sonographer explains the fetal growth measurements, umbilical artery Doppler, AFI and other wellbeing findings during the appointment and provides a same-day digital report. Where a measurement or observation needs maternity review, you will be advised about the appropriate next step.

Estimated fetal weight is an estimateUltrasound cannot weigh the baby directly. The calculated weight has a recognised margin of error and should be interpreted as an estimate.
Umbilical artery Doppler adds placental-flow informationDoppler indices provide information about resistance within the fetoplacental circulation and are interpreted in relation to gestational age.
AFI documents amniotic fluid volumeThe amniotic fluid index provides a structured assessment of fluid volume and is considered alongside fetal growth and the wider scan findings.
Percentile is not a diagnosisA centile describes estimated size relative to a reference population. It is interpreted with gestation, trend and other clinical information.
Onward guidance when appropriateIf the findings suggest a need for NHS or specialist maternity assessment, this will be explained clearly.
!
Reduced fetal movements or acute pregnancy symptoms should not wait for a private growth scan.

If your baby’s movements are reduced or changed, or you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, leaking fluid, regular contractions when not expected, severe headache or visual symptoms, fainting, fever or feel very unwell, contact your NHS maternity unit or maternity triage promptly.

Fetal growth scan FAQs

Detailed answers before you book.

Common questions about fetal measurements, estimated weight, growth percentiles, placenta, fluid, Doppler, reporting and when NHS maternity assessment is more appropriate.

What is a Fetal Growth & Wellbeing Scan?
A Fetal Growth & Wellbeing Scan is a private ultrasound, available from 24 to 40 weeks, that assesses fetal growth measurements together with pregnancy wellbeing observations appropriate to gestation.
How much is the Fetal Growth & Wellbeing Scan?
The scan is £120 at Tunbridge Wells and Orpington and £140 at Canary Wharf. The correct clinic price is shown again when you choose your booking route.
When can I book a growth scan?
This service is available from 24 to 40 weeks. The most useful timing depends on why you are booking, whether you are checking a single point in time or comparing growth over time, and any advice already given by your midwife or maternity team.
What measurements are taken during a fetal growth scan?
Where technically obtainable, standard fetal biometry may include measurements of the head, abdomen and femur. These measurements are used to estimate fetal size and an estimated fetal weight.
Will you give me an estimated fetal weight?
Yes, where the required measurements can be obtained reliably, an estimated fetal weight is calculated. It is important to understand that ultrasound weight estimation has an accepted margin of error and is not an exact measurement of the baby's actual weight.
What does a fetal growth percentile mean?
A growth percentile compares the baby's estimated size with a reference population at the same gestational age. A percentile is one part of the overall assessment and should be interpreted alongside previous measurements, growth trend and the wider clinical context.
Does the scan include an Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)?
Yes. Amniotic fluid is assessed using an Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI), providing a structured measurement of fluid volume around the baby.
Does the scan check the placenta?
Placental location and a general placental overview may be documented where technically visible. A focused growth scan does not replace specialist placental assessment when one has been recommended.
Will the scan show the baby's position?
Yes, fetal lie or presentation can be documented, particularly later in pregnancy. Baby's position can still change, especially before the final weeks of pregnancy.
Does the Fetal Growth & Wellbeing Scan include umbilical artery Doppler?
A standard Growth & Wellbeing Scan is focused on fetal biometry and wellbeing. Specialist Doppler assessment is a separate examination unless specifically included in the service you have booked or clinically indicated within an agreed pathway.
Can this scan tell me if my baby is growing normally?
The scan can assess fetal measurements and estimated size at that point in time. A single scan provides a snapshot; when growth trend is the main concern, comparison with previous reliable measurements can be more informative.
What if the baby measures small or large?
The Sonographer will explain the measurements and any recognised limitations. If the findings suggest that NHS maternity review or further surveillance is appropriate, you will be advised to contact the relevant maternity team.
Will I receive a report and images?
You receive a same-day digital report and ultrasound images. Short baby clips may also be provided where obtainable and recorded, while clinical documentation remains the priority.
Do I need a GP or midwife referral?
No. You can self-refer and book directly. If you have been advised by your NHS maternity team to have formal growth surveillance, continue to follow that pathway even if you also arrange a private scan.
When should I contact maternity triage instead of waiting for a private scan?
Contact your NHS maternity unit or maternity triage promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, leaking fluid, regular contractions when not expected, severe headache or visual symptoms, fainting, fever or if you feel very unwell.
