Clinical assessment

What we assess during your dating scan.

The scan focuses on dating and basic pregnancy wellbeing at this stage, with measurements and observations documented clearly in your report.

01

Gestational age

Standard fetal measurements appropriate to gestation are used to estimate how far along the pregnancy is.

02

Estimated Due Date

An ultrasound EDD is calculated from the dating measurement obtained at the appointment.

03

Fetal cardiac activity

Heartbeat is assessed where expected and technically visible for the gestational stage.

04

Number of babies

The scan documents whether a singleton or multiple pregnancy is seen where views are clear.

05

Pregnancy overview

Relevant visible early-pregnancy findings are documented alongside the dating measurement.

06

Placental position

Placental position may be noted where visible and appropriate, although this is not a detailed placental assessment.

How pregnancy dating works

Measurement-based dating, not guesswork.

The purpose of the scan is to establish gestational age using the fetal measurement that is most appropriate for the stage of pregnancy, then use that measurement to provide an estimated due date.

Crown-rump lengthAt this stage, crown-rump length is commonly used where technically obtainable and appropriate.
Known datesYour LMP, known EDD or assisted-conception dates provide helpful context but do not replace the ultrasound measurement.
IVF pregnanciesEmbryo-transfer date and embryo age at transfer should be provided because IVF pregnancies are interpreted using treatment dates.
Small differences are commonUltrasound dating can differ from LMP-based estimates; your NHS maternity pathway remains responsible for formal dating and screening decisions.

What to expect at UKSONO

Calm, professional pregnancy ultrasound with clear explanation throughout.

Digital images and short baby clips are provided where obtainable and recorded. Clinical documentation remains the priority.

Scope & limitations

Dating scan versus screening scan.

This appointment is designed to date the pregnancy and document basic wellbeing. It is not a substitute for formal NHS screening or a detailed fetal anatomical assessment.

What this scan is designed for

Gestational-age assessment, estimated due date, fetal cardiac activity where appropriate, number of babies seen and relevant visible early-pregnancy observations.

What this scan does not replace

NHS first-trimester screening, nuchal translucency or chromosomal screening, the detailed 20-week anatomy scan, specialist fetal medicine or emergency pregnancy assessment.

Dating scan FAQs

Detailed answers before you book.

Common questions about timing, pregnancy dating, EDD, fetal heartbeat, twins, IVF dates, NHS screening and what you receive after your scan.

What is a Dating Pregnancy Scan?
A Dating Pregnancy Scan is an ultrasound assessment used to estimate gestational age and establish an estimated due date (EDD). It also documents fetal cardiac activity where appropriate, the number of babies seen and other relevant early-pregnancy findings.
How much is the Dating Scan?
The Dating Scan is £100 at Tunbridge Wells and Orpington and £120 at Canary Wharf.
When is the best time to book?
This service is designed for approximately 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. If your dates are uncertain, you can still book and provide your best estimate or known dates in the booking comments.
How is pregnancy dating performed?
Dating is based on standard fetal measurements appropriate to gestation. In this stage of pregnancy, crown-rump length is commonly used where technically obtainable, with the measurement interpreted alongside the scan findings and your known dates.
Will the scan confirm a heartbeat?
Yes. Fetal cardiac activity is assessed where expected and technically visible for the gestational stage.
Can you tell if I am having twins?
Yes. The scan assesses the number of fetuses seen and can document whether the pregnancy appears singleton or multiple where the views are clear.
Does the scan include an estimated due date?
Yes. The scan includes an ultrasound estimate of gestational age and an estimated due date based on the measurements obtained.
Does this include a nuchal translucency or chromosomal screening test?
No. This is a dating ultrasound, not a chromosomal screening test. Nuchal translucency assessment and combined screening are separate pathways where available and clinically appropriate.
Will you check the placenta?
Placental position may be noted where visible and appropriate, but the primary purpose of this appointment is pregnancy dating and basic wellbeing rather than a detailed placental assessment.
Does this replace my NHS 12-week scan?
No. A private Dating Scan complements NHS maternity care. Please keep all NHS antenatal, screening and dating appointments that have been offered to you.
What if the scan dates differ from my LMP?
Ultrasound dating may differ from dates calculated from the last menstrual period. The result is documented using the fetal measurement obtained at the scan and should be considered alongside your NHS maternity dating pathway.
What if I conceived through IVF?
If you conceived through IVF, provide your embryo-transfer date, embryo age at transfer if known and any fertility-clinic estimated due date. IVF pregnancies are interpreted using treatment dates rather than LMP alone.
What do I receive after the scan?
You receive a same-day digital report via Medifile, digital ultrasound images and short baby clips where obtainable and recorded.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can self-refer and book directly.
When should I seek urgent NHS assessment instead?
Heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, fever or feeling acutely unwell require urgent NHS assessment and should not wait for a private scan.
