What to Expect

Preparation
  • Hydration / Bladder: You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for initial trans‑abdominal views; a transvaginal scan may be recommended for clearer imaging and is performed only with your explicit consent. (see guidance)
  • Blood test: No special prep is usually required; any specific instructions will be emailed after booking.
During your visit
A clinical specialist sonographer performs your pelvic ultrasound. If your package includes bloods, a sample is taken at the same visit. You’ll receive same‑day verbal scan findings; premium includes a GP review.
Results & follow‑up
Written ultrasound report is provided; CA125 results follow when available. If results suggest higher risk, we’ll advise on next steps in line with national pathways.

Why CA125 + Ultrasound?

CA125 can be raised in many benign conditions and may be normal in some ovarian cancers; ultrasound adds anatomical detail. Together they help triage risk and guide referral when needed. (see guidance)

FAQ

Is CA125 a screening test for everyone?
There is no national screening programme for ovarian cancer in asymptomatic women at average risk. CA125 is used with imaging and symptoms to guide next steps. (see guidance)
What happens if CA125 is raised or the scan is abnormal?
Further assessment may be recommended, including urgent referral in line with NICE pathways. We’ll explain results and coordinate appropriate follow‑up.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly online in minutes.

References & Guidance

  • NICE NG12: Measure CA125 in primary care when symptoms suggest ovarian cancer; if ≥35 IU/ml, arrange ultrasound. Updated surveillance notes ongoing evaluation of dual CA125 + ultrasound approaches.
  • Cancer Research UK: CA125 is not completely reliable; non‑cancer conditions can raise CA125 and some ovarian cancers may have normal CA125.
  • BMUS: Many services still ask for a full bladder for initial trans‑abdominal views; transvaginal ultrasound often provides superior detail and is done with consent.
  • Evidence reviews: CA125 sensitivity is lower in early‑stage disease; combining with imaging improves triage.
